. the hearing began with a very very dramatic moment when former congress woman gabby giffords came inest forted by the chairman, chuck grassley, and her husband, mark kelly. she was asked to give the very first words at the hearing before anybody else spoke. she did so only 72 words, very moving powerful and halting speech, because she still has a long way to go with her recovery. >> violence is a big problem. too many children are dying. too many children. we must do something. >> bill: it was all carefully laid out. she had obviously rehearsed it and it really does sound like a first grader right? reading aloud in the class. >> yeah, she had to relearn how to speak. >> bill: she looked these senator right in the eye and said, you know look we need you. >> you must act. be bold, be courageous. americans are counting on you. >> bill: seventy-two words every one counted for sure. then the chairman opened with his statement calling on everybody to be open-minded. try to come to some solution the high road, patrick leahy took, and then chuck grassley got up and he lit in

would be alive. let me give you an example. in the case of gabby gifford when the guy had to swap out a new magazine he fumbled and he was able and an older woman reached up and grabbed his hand. all of them would've been dead had he not had to change that magazine, had there been 30 or 40 clips. same way with aurora. a guy had 100 shells in the magazine. fortunately it jammed. it jammed enough that it gave time for folks to get there and in fact save lives. >> sreenivasan: back in connecticut this morning, the first meeting of the sandy hook advisory commission took place. connecticut's democratic governor, dannel malloy has tasked the panel with making recommendations on school safety, mental health and gun violence prevention. >> we need to develop a common sense way to regulate access to guns. we need to make sure that our mental health professionals have access to resources and information they need to get treatment to those who need it. we must make sure the public has better information about what to do when they suspect someone might be battling mental illness. >> sreenivasan:

to do our job. gabby giffords was in tucson at a public event with their constituents. there was someone in the parking lot who had a weapon. that individual nearly killed the wrong person because he thought the person that was holding down the shooter was a perpetrator of the crime and he nearly killed a good samaritan. having more guns is not the answer. have think more guns in schools is not the answer. law enforcement are opposed to that. host: our guest has a master's from george washington university. she was with the human rights campaign for 11 years. he spent much of your career on gay and lesbian issues. what did she think of the president's inaugural speech? guest: i thought it was amazing. the message he shared about, this is our time and this is our challenge. for me, the most memorable line was way talk about the marchers from seneca to selma to stonewall in such a clear and simple phrase he captured the struggle of some many of us, the civil rights challenge of so many of us. we need to engage in the conversation. host: what do you expect from the congress in this area? gu
